Asp - What is an ASP animal?

The ancient Greek word "aspis" meant any of the poisonous snakes that lived in the Nile area; the modern English word "asp" is an adaptation of this word. Latin aspis means "viper" and has its roots in Greek. The popular belief is that the Egyptian cobra was meant by the term aspis.
