Backpropagation - Why is backpropagation difficult?

The process of backpropagation isn't always simple. If you don't know your way around matrix multiplication, calculus, or linear algebra, it may be a real pain. A great deal of mental work is still required to understand backpropagation, even after getting a handle on these ideas.
