Cobweb - Are cobwebs from spiders or dust?

Although spiders are the true creators of cobwebs, their webs often hang from long-gone buildings. As time passes, these abandoned webs become more unsightly due to the accumulation of dust and other debris. In contrast to newly spun spider webs, cobwebs don't seem to be holding anything together.
