Existential Risk - Why is it called an existential threat?

For any given culture or species, a "existential threat" is any kind of peril that may endanger their very survival. "Existential questions" is a term borrowed from the philosophical tradition of the twentieth century known as Existentialism, which seeks to answer issues like the meaning of life and the universe's origins.
