Question

Mutation - What causes a mutation?

Answer

The most common reasons for mutations to occur are faulty DNA replication or the negative impacts of mutagens, which include radiation and certain chemicals. These mutagens can change the structure of certain nucleotides by interacting with DNA. Though DNA-repair enzymes aid in reducing mutations, they are present in all cells (Section 14.2).
