Natural Language Processing - Why is NLP difficult?

Multiple variables contribute to Natural Language Processing's (NLP) difficulty. For example, it is already challenging enough without considering the hundreds of natural languages that exist, each with its own set of syntactical norms. Words are already difficult enough without adding the ambiguity that arises when their meaning changes depending on the surrounding context.
