Neuron - What is an axon?

One component of nerve cells called an axon is responsible for transmitting impulses from the cell body to other parts of the neuron. One axon often links a neuron to another neuron or to cells in the muscle or glands. For example, certain axons may reach all the way to the tip of the toe, which is quite an impressive length.
