An Interrupt Service Routine (ISR) is initiated whenever the hardware requests an interrupt. In some systems, a single interrupt signal receiver (ISR) handles all requests (polled interrupts), whereas in others, many ISRs are used, one for each interrupt source (vectored interrupts).
