In 2018, new building lots averaged 8,982 square feet, or approximately one-fifth of an acre, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau. In contrast, a quarter of an acre, or 10,994 square feet, was the typical size of a house lot in 2009. On average, that's a decrease of 18.3 square feet in size.
