Barcode - Are barcodes just binary?

Barcodes may appear to be binary data, but they really have the ability to store a wide range of characters. These characters can be actual binary data, UNICODE-characters with values greater than 0x80, or ASCII formatting characters like line feeds or carriage returns. Just to keep things simple, let's call all of this Binary Data.
