Sao - Why did SAO become bad?

When looking at Sword Art Online from a technical perspective, the first few seasons were disappointing due to bad writing. Especially in the first arc, "Aincrad," the story's tempo was all over the place. Months and years flew by with no background information to explain what was happening.
